Blueberry: plant and properties

Blueberry, one of the greediest and healthiest berries, in the scientific world it is known as Vaccinium Myrtillus, has very ancient origins and is used to treat various pathologies. It is found in mountainous areas, in Italy both in the Alps and in the Apennines, in the woods where the soil is rich in humus.

Blueberry: plant

The plant is basically a small shrub, belongs to the Ericaceae family, on average it is 60 cm high even if the ones we are used to are much smaller and form a soft green carpet in which to hunt for tasty fruits. And even before that of flowers, which arrive in spring.

In general, the fruits can be black, red and blue, in all three cases they represent a source of food but are used as a medicine. The Blueberry, as a spontaneous plant in the northern hemisphere, however, including about 130 species, we will see some, I will let you discover the others by traveling and tasting.

Blueberry: properties

As the color changes, the properties also change slightly, always remaining a absolutely useful and healthy fruit. It is often present in diets, dietary advice, resolutions of those who want to lose weight or stay fit. But also of those who want to enjoy life because it is good and virtuous.

The small berries, beyond the color, they are almost magical: they are in fact equipped with an enormous quantity of antioxidant substances, thus able to prevent cardiovascular diseases, protect against tumors and even delay the natural aging process. From color to color, let's see what uses to make of it, let's discover the Blueberry that suits us.

Blackberry

Also called Vaccinuim myrtillus it is spontaneous in Europe and its plant is 20-40 cm high, it blooms in May and the fruits arrive in July-August in the areas of the Alps and in the Apennines up to Abruzzo. It is definitely among all types and colors, the one richest in healthy ingredients, it contains sugars and many acids, in particular citric acid which protects cells but also oxalic acid, hydrocinnamic acid and gamma-linolenic acid.

The oxalic is responsible for the sour taste, the hydrocinnamic is instead able to neutralize the carcinogenic nitrosamines linked to the ingestion of nitrates. Finally, gamma-linolenic acid has beneficial effects on nervous system. The high content of folic acid is particularly useful and anthocyanin tannins and glycosides, in addition to giving the characteristic black color, reduce permeability and strengthen the structure of the capillaries and have a antihemorrhagic effect as well as on free radicals.

Cranberry

If red the blueberry is called Vaccinium vitis idaea, it also grows spontaneously in Europe but is lower: 10-40 cm. The flowers are white or pink and appear in the Alps and in the northern Apennines. To distinguish it from black, in addition to color and flavor, there is also the texture of the leaves, leathery, shiny and persistent. The red fruit is rich in iron, vitamin C and fiber, as well as being very tasty therefore among the favorites to prepare excellent jams, preserves and jellies. And there is also grappa, obtained from the maceration of these fruits.

Often the cranberry is used to prevent and treat urinary tract infections but it has also proven effective against mycoses and viruses. It is recommended for those suffering from kidney stones, diarrhea, constipation and problems related to irritable colon and hemorrhoids.

Another beneficial effect of this fruit is that of being able to mitigate small skin imperfections such as rosacea, containing among the active ingredients vitamins A and C, citric and malic acid, mirtillin, phosphorus, calcium, manganese.

Giant blueberry

It is an extremely demanding species, the giant blueberry: it prefers light soils, even if it tolerates high levels of clay, it must however be taken into account that its plant in the first years often has a stunted development, you have to believe in it to see the fruits born.

The main varieties of Giant blueberry American are the Vaccinium corymbosum ´Duke´, light blue color, with a well balanced taste between sweet and sour, the Vaccinium corymbosum ´Jersey´, with large blueberries, initially acidic, but then very sweet, the Vaccinium corymbosum ´Patriot´, with large blue-purple fruits, slightly flattened at the ends. A giant blueberry plant I would buy it to experiment, relying on Vivai Le Georgiche.

Blueberry: cultivation
