Acerola is a tropical fruit that grows wild in Central and South America; it is grown mainly in Brazil. The fruits are very similar to cherries and for this reason acerola is also known as the Barbados or Brazilian cherry. Inside, however, the fruit is divided into segments.
Although it is little known, we must point out that acerola is one of the fruits that contain a high amount of vitamin C; a much higher concentration of vitamin C than oranges and kiwis: 100 grams of acerola contain on average between 1700-2100 mg of vitamin C and comparing it with orange, which on average has 50 mg per 100 grams, acerola contains 34 to 42 times more!
In the countries of origin, these fruits are eaten fresh or in the form of jam. In Europe, it is difficult to find; You can find various acerola-based products in pharmacies or herbalists.
Acerola, nutritional properties
As we have already mentioned it is a natural source of vitamin C; it is rich in ascorbic acid, known as vitamin C1 and also has a high content of bioflavonoids, also called vitamin C2: these molecules together form the C complex, the true substance with a vitamin action.
It also has a fair amount of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, provitamin A and various mineral salts including iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium.
Acerola, beneficial properties
Thanks to its high intake of micronutrients, acerola has a large number of beneficial properties. First of all, it improves gastrointestinal functions and makes immune defense more efficient: it develops an antioxidant action by inactivating free radicals, responsible for cellular degenerative processes.

The high concentration of antioxidant substances makes acerola an authentic panacea for blood circulation: it protects good cholesterol from oxidative processes, contributes to cardiovascular health.
In fact, recent studies have confirmed that the juice of this plant, if taken constantly, can decrease the rate of glucose and triglycerides in the blood, at the same time, it can contribute to raise HDL cholesterol, the good one; this would create the basis for creating a strategy for the prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
It is effective against the fragility of capillaries and hematomas. It has anti-hemorrhagic properties.
Diuretic properties are also recognized and contributes to the health and well-being of the skin, probably due to the vitamin C of which it is rich.
It is healthy for the eyes: many studies have shown that the level of vitamin C present in the eyes decreases with age and that an intake of vitamin C prevents this reduction with a consequent lower risk of developing cataracts.
From the acerola you can find the dry extract of the nebulized fruit in the form of capsules or tablets, for sale in herb shops or in shops that handle organic products. It is also commercially available in powder and juice.
Acerola chewable tablets are very popular, which allow you to carry out an important activity to support the immune system: one tablet a day is enough.
The daily dosage ranges from 5 to 7 mg per kilogram of body weight: it is advisable to take it in two daily doses, preferably between meals. Before taking the product, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
Numerous toxicological researches have shown that acerola is harmless and has no side effects.
It may not be recommended to take it in case of gastric acidity. Excessive doses are also not recommended: an excessive dose can promote the formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones, as vitamin C can be converted into oxalate.
