Pocket door, assemblyand advice in case of subframe to be applied in masonry (plaster) or with plasterboard panels.

Pocket door or folding door

Afolding dooris simpler frommountbut it has some disadvantages. The folding doors they have very thin elements but they should never be closed completely, thus restricting the available passage. A folding door, restricting the passage of the door, makes it difficult to transport bulky objects from one room to another (chairs, tables, various equipment ...) and above all, a folding door restricts the passage of useful light.

Pocket door or sliding door

Theretractable doorsI'msliding doorswhich disappear by entering the thickness of the wall. There sliding door manages to disappear into the wall thanks to a metal subframe specially installed in the internal cavity of the wall.

The assembly of a sliding (or retractable) door consists in inserting the counter frame into the wall.

Pocket door: mortar or plasterboard

How to mount a pocket door? With the assembly, is the subframe inserted into the wall, how? In the case of pre-existing walls, it will be necessary to knock down the wall and then rebuild it around the subframe.

The subframe is equipped with metal meshes on the two major faces, the plaster and finishing mortars adhere to the metal meshes. To facilitate assembly, the drywall but, in this case, you will need to choose a specific subframe for the drywall.

Both for plasterboard and for plaster, the finished wall equipped with a subframe can reach a thickness of only 150 cm! In fact, on the market there are counter frames for retractable sliding doors for every need.

Pocket door, assembly

For DIY assembly of a retractable sliding door, as stated, you will need to demolish the wall to rebuild it at the same time as the insertion of the subframe.

The subframe is positioned on the floor.Pay attention to the thickness that the subframe will occupy once installed. With the masonry you will plug on the sides left uncovered by the counter frame: above, below and on the two walls. Fixing the subframe to the rest of the wall are metal anchors to be walled up.

Before applying the plasterboard or plaster, make sure that the sliding mechanisms are positioned correctly. Do some practical tests: it would be a real shame to mount everything and then discover that the door cannot slide well due to a misaligned mechanism.

The plaster must be placed in the metal mesh of the same subframe. The brackets of the subframe panel must be folded outwards (remove them with a pair of pliers). At the same time as the counterframe, the door frame must be mounted which must form a regular rectangle.

The plastering is made simple by the metal mesh that covers the two faces of the subframe. The first layer of plaster can be spread with a simple trowel, while the finishing layer can be made smooth and homogeneous with a well-moistened trowel.

Keep in mind that after plastering, you will have to wait for the drying time of the plaster mortar to be able to paint and mount the door with its sliding guides. Once assembled, the door must then be adjusted in height: to do this, act on the bolts that act as registers.

In case ofmounting with plasterboardthe work is even easier even if the thicknesses occupied could be greater depending on the thickness of the plasterboard panels. The plasterboard panels must be applied on the two faces of the subframe which will carry special stops to anchor the plasterboard to itself. As stated, the subframe of theretractable sliding doors, is different according to the type of coating you are going to use.
