Outdoor floor, do-it-yourself installation; what you need:
Fishing line, pegs, spirit level and straight edge
Placing a line stretched between two pegs placed at the edge of the future floor will help you define the sections of the excavation.
The first thing to do when you intend to lay an external floor is to define the boundaries and carry out an excavation.
Depending on the size of the surface, you will need a shorter or longer aluminum or wooden straightedge, in order to smooth out the sand on which the spirit level will be placed to carry out the checks.
How to start the work oflaying of the external floor?
# 1. First thing to do: you have to clean up the portion of land to be paved. Get rid of weeds and roots. Work until a level surface is obtained and excavate by removing about 10 - 15 cm of soil depending on the thickness of the coating you have chosen and the sand bed.
#2. The second step consists in depositing the layer of sand which must be more or less leveled according to the chosen flooring.
# 3 In case of laying of outdoor floors in irregular blocks
If you have chosen irregular elements that need to be spaced, there is no need to level but you just need to beat the surface layer with the shovel and place the chosen floor blocks on it. At the end you have to fill the joints with a soil mixed with grass seeds. The effect obtained is comparable to that shown in the photo above but varies according to the blocks you have chosen.
# 3 In case of installation of self-locking blocks of regular shape
In these circumstances the work is more difficult because you have to level the surface with a brush. Delimit the perimeter space with concrete curbs embedded in a special excavation. Level the sand with a straightedge and place, one by one, the bricks or other regular shaped elements you have chosen topaving the garden. The elements chosen must be perfectly matched or fitted together. To fit the stones or other elements of a self-locking floor, you can help yourself with a mallet, very useful for making small corrections or for settling the elements laid.
# 3 In case of laying an outdoor floor on a screed base
If the floor is intended for pedestrian use only, the previous solutions may be suitable. If cars are to be driven on, a screed will need to be made. To make aflooringfor tiles on a screed floor you will need a toothed manara to level the adhesive mortar in constant quantity. By passing the tile, the voids made with the toothed hand will become uniform and will limit the risk of air bubbles. The "joints" are sealed with a mixture of sand soaked with water and cement, spread this mixture with a broom and remove the surface with the special vibrating plate.
When excavating 10 - 15 cm to be filled with sand, remember to respect a minimum slope (in the absence of manholes or other management systems) for the management of rainwater.
If you have to pave the perimeter of the house by creating a sidewalk in the garden, the slope must point to the side opposite to that of the perimeter wall of the house to avoid rising damp which would damage the domestic masonry. Before paving the perimeter of the house, we recommend that you protect your walls with a special sheath.
