How to bend wood: types of wood curvature and possible applications in the home. How to bend wood with DIY or professional techniques.

Therecurvature of the woodis one of the most refined processing of this material. If the wood is bent with the right techniques, it will remain strong and resistant, if the tension is applied incorrectly, the wood can stiffen until it breaks.

Bending the wood, which wood to choose

First of all, let's say that not all woods are suitable forcurvature. Theplywoodit can almost always be curved: when a wood is thinly cut, it is easier to bend it and the curvature can have a more or less wide radius. For this we say that it is relatively simplebending plywood.

When a wood has a greater thickness, it is essential that it is knot-free and that it is compact and hard wood such as ash, cherry, beech, walnut and oak.

Another factor affecting the curvature is seasoning: a young wood is easier tobendbut the fold would not hold! To have onecurvatureperfect, a perfectly seasoned wood must be used.

How to bend wood

It's possiblebend the woodin two ways, both can be done at home and with DIY but with precise precautions.

The first technique forbend the woodconsists in proceeding with a cutting and gluing process, in fact we speak ofartificial curvature. One more curvaturenaturalconsists in wetting the wood fibers in order to make them more flexible for the application of the curve, in this context we also speak ofbending of wood with steam.

How to bend wood at home? You can proceed to either artificial or natural curvature. For artificial curving you need wood cutting tools, forcurvatureNaturally, you must have a template with pins.

The template with pins can be purchased in DIY and DIY stores or made independently using wood!

The template with pins is a solid wood (or plywood) top with a thickness of at least a few centimeters. Holes are drilled on this floor in perfectly ordered rows and columns. The holes have a diameter of 15-20 mm and will accommodate the pins intended to hold the woodbent overuntil finished curvature.

The template with pins has a third element, a matrix; it is a rectangular shaped piece of wood (or plywood) with an arched side. The matrix is perforated in the center so as to be locked with a pin in one of the holes in the template.

The wood to be bent is placed between the arched side of the matrix and the pins inserted in the holes of the shelf.

This apparently complex system allows you tobending wood in the housewith extreme ease: thanks to the pins and holes it is possible to set the most desired radius of curvature.

With the template with pins it is possiblebending wooden slatsor evenplywoodeven with a thickness of less than 8 mm.

To facilitate thecurvature, before placing the interlocking wood, this must be soaked in warm water. In order for it to soak well in water it will be necessary to immerse it completely and leave it to soak for several hours. It must be placed on the template while still wet and remain there for several days, until completely dry. If the curvature is not as desired, you can repeat the process.

Therecurvature of the woodartificial can only be used for decorative purposes because the resistance of the curve is rather limited. On the contrary, thecurvaturenatural can give life to pieces of wood used for structural purposes.
