Camelia, repotting:when to decant the camellia

When to decant the camellia? The best time for therepottingof thecamelliacoincides with autumn, when the plant is in full vegetative rest. You can repot Japanese camellia even in the first winter, however, due to the intense cold, we do not recommend this option. The ideal would be to act in October, before the temperatures drop.

The decanting must be done every two or three years, before the plant emits new jets.

Camelia, repotting:how to repot the camellia

Thedecantingit is a delicate operation to be performed very carefully in order not to risk damaging the root system. Here's how to proceed:

  1. Collar
Observe the plant and understand the exact point where the stem lets itself be covered by the roots. The connection point between the stem and the root system represents the collar of the plant.
  2. Remove the plant from the pot
If you have difficulty extracting the plant from the pot, to help you, soak the clod with water by irrigating copiously.
  3. Open the clod
Eliminate the soil not occupied by the roots and open the bread of soil that surrounds the entire root system. This operation is recommended to prevent the roots from intertwining excessively.
  4. Prepare the bottom
Prepare a layer of draining material such as gravel or expanded clay at the bottom of the pot. Add 3 cm of specific soil for acidophilic plants, possibly mixed with silica sand respecting the proportions 2: 1, two parts of soil for each part of sand.
  5. Repotting of camellia
Lay the plant down and level with more soil. It is important that the collar is at the same level as the previous vase. Press the topsoil and, in the following days, add (if necessary) more soil to bring it back to level.

The pot to be used for transplanting must be one third larger than the previous container. Choose clay pots as plastic pots tend to overheat in the sun.

Protect the camellia from the cold

In winter, the camelliait must be protected from the cold, especially in the North. To protect the camellia from the cold, in November, cover the entire foliage with a protective sheet and move thejarin a bright and sheltered position from the wind. To avoid freezing the soil and roots, also protect the pot.

How to prune the camellia

The pruning of the camellia is carried out in autumn, you just need to prune by eliminating the dry or damaged branches. If pruning wants to stimulate flowering with a production of larger flowers, remove the smallest buds (only if present in large numbers) and at a close distance. Another pruning is done in spring: after flowering, remove the withered flowers.

Camelia Japonica:variety to grow in pots

There are several varieties of the Camelia japonica species, some of which lend themselves particularly well to cultivation in pots. In this paragraph we suggest the three varieties of camellia to grow in pots:

this camellia blooms from February to early April, its flowers are deep red.

this variety blooms between February and March, its flowers are white variegated with red, semi-double.

Fertilize potted camellia

Fertilization is essential for all potted plants but ...Warning! Camellia should NOT be fertilized with universal fertilizers! Unsuitable fertilizers can damage camellia, cause its buds to fall off or not to bloom. If the camellia does not bloom, pay attention to the quality of the soil, often these are shortcomings.Camellia is an acidophilic plant, if you have a fertilizer for hydrangeas, rhododendrons or azaleas at home, you can use it, but you cannot use a universal fertilizer.

A good fertilizer forcamelliasyou can buy it on Amazon at a price of € 22.90 for a 5 kg bag. I recommend purchasing this fertilizer especially if you irrigate the plants with tap water in the summer, which tends to increase the pH of the soil: limescale accumulates in the soil of the pot, making it difficult for camellia in pot, the absorption of certain nutrients. For all information on the product mentioned, I refer you to the Amazon pageGranular fertilizer with acidifying action.
