Cough in children, when to worry

Cough, just like fever, is a defense mechanism implemented by our body to free the respiratory tract.

Therecough, in adults and children, it is a particularly frequent symptom. In children and infants, coughing can trigger parental concern ... but in most cases there is nothing to worry about!

Cough in children, when to worry? According to the Paediatricians Association, a medical check-up is required when:

  • in case of nocturnal cough.
If the child coughs only at night, there is involvement of the bronchi and in this case it is necessary to consult a pediatrician to avoid the risk of bronchitis.
  • In case of cough only in the morning or during the day.
If the child coughs only during the day, there is no need to worry. The irritation only affects the upper airways such as the pharynx, larynx and trachea. The child coughs to clear the airways and the disorder usually resolves spontaneously.
  • In case of nocturnal and daytime cough.
    Needs some extra attention.

Even the characteristics of children's cough can give us some indications on the direction to take.

  • Cough without mucus or dry cough in children
Dry cough must be watched! Within three to four days it should become catarrhal cough (fat cough) with the production of secretions. If the dry cough persists beyond three or four days, it is best to consult your doctor.
  • Catarrhal cough or oily cough in children
Oily cough, or productive cough, is very common in children. There is no need to worry because it is similar to a simple cold.
  • Barking cough or cavernous cough
When the cough resembles the barking of a dog or the cry of a seal, particular attention must be paid. Even though moms describe it as a cavernous cough, it's not. In this case, the cough occurs without any other warning symptoms, this type of cough can cause breathing problems and can worsen during the night. It is necessary to consult a pediatrician as soon as possible who generally prescribes a cortisone-based treatment. This kind of cough affects the subglottic larynx and is prone to relapses, so ask your pediatrician to explain how to act in case of relapses.
  • Cough or whooping cough
There are vaccines against pertussis but unfortunately cases still occur. In this case, the cough is characterized by more or less frequent attacks separated by free intervals. Consult a pediatrician.

Cough in children, when to contact the doctor

To the cases already set out in the previous paragraphs, other occurrences must also be added such as:

  • If the child has a fever for more than three days.
  • If the child is pale, with dark circles (circled eyes) and coughs irritably.
  • If the cough persists for two weeks, it is best to see your doctor to evaluate tonsillitis or sinusitis.
  • In case of inhalation of a foreign body. In this case the child may vomit at the same time as the cough.
  • If you are breathing heavily or with difficulty, especially if your lips are bluish - greyish.

Cough in infants, when to contact your doctor

If it is a very young child, you should contact the pediatrician immediately. In newborns, cough is not a common symptom: in the very first months of life the cough reflex is poor and respiratory tract diseases are rare. When the newborn coughs from a few drops of milk or with the onset of salivation (roughly the newborn begins to salivate between the 2nd and 3rd month), it is a normal phenomenon but even in these cases coughs are rare.

In case of cough in infants under 3 months of age, it is important to always contact the pediatrician.
