Plants reproducible by cutting

Plants reproducible by cutting: on which plants it is possible to use the cutting technique. Woody cutting, green cutting, semi-wood cutting, leaf or leaf cutting ... rooting in water or peat.

Plants reproducible by cutting

With themultiplication by cuttingswe can reproduce fruit plants, ornamental plants, shrubs, herbaceous ... In this page we will see on which plants we can adopt this method.

Generally speaking, we can say that the rooting substrate can be watery (cutting in water) for herbaceous plants while a more complex substrate (peat, soil ...) is required for woody and semi-woody cuttings.

Cutting in water

Who are you wondering what are the plants that they can take root in water is in the right category.

There are many plants that can be multiplied with a cutting that uses aqueous substrate. In most cases they are green cuttings, that is aromatic plants or herbaceous plants ... however in some cases even cuttings of some fruit trees can be rooted in water, this is the case of fig cutting and pomegranate cutting .

Green cutting

Theregreen wood cutting or "green cutting" is typical of herbaceous plants or soft wood plants.

The peculiarity of the green cutting is that an immature part of the stem is taken. On many plants, in fact, it is possible to practice both the green cutting (taking the apical part of a stem) and the semi-woody cutting (taking a branch).

Theplants reproducible by cuttingthat are able to root very easily are:

  • Rosemary cutting
to learn more: rosemary cutting in water.
  • Juniper cutting
  • Yew cutting
  • Cypress cutting
  • Lavender cutting
  • Gorse cutting
  • Cutting of deutzia
  • Aloe vera cutting
  • Forsythia cutting
  • Philadelphus cutting
  • Abelia cutting
  • Cenoto cutting
  • Mint cutting
    It can root in water
  • Basil cutting
    It can root in water

Many of the plants listed here can root in water but it would also increase the risk of rot. For example, for the lavender cutting, it is true that it can root in water but the times would be longer, better if you use a sprig of lavender with a stem at least 10 cm long to root in a mixture of peat and fertile soil.

When to reproduce these plants by cuttings? The right time

The cutting is taken between May and June. These plants can produce many roots in a short time. The easiest plants to reproduce by cuttings are spring or summer flowering shrubs, aromatic herbs and conifers listed above.

Semi-woody cutting

The ideal period for thesemi-woody cuttingruns from July to the end of September. These cuttings root best in areas not exposed to full sun. They require more time to root and the use of a rooting hormone or better, phytostimulating substances that facilitate the emission of roots by the branch taken is recommended.

Which plants can be reproduced with the semi-woody cutting?

All the stripping and flowering shrubs that you can multiply with the green cuttingand they can also be reproduced by semi-woody cutting. In addition, the plants reproducible by semi-woody cutting are:

  • Camellia cutting
  • Cutting of elegno
  • Berberis cutting
  • Pittospore cutting
  • Holly cutting
  • Photine cutting
  • Maonia cutting
  • Azalea cutting
  • Rhododendron cutting
  • Viburnum cutting
  • Rose cutting
  • Bougainvillea cutting

The rose cutting is possible both from a branch (semi-woody cutting) and from a leaf (green cutting). For all the info: rose cutting.

Ripe wood cutting

Plantswhich can be multiplied by woody cuttingare all stripping tree species such as poplar, flowering plum trees (which can also be multiplied by semi-woody cutting), willow (which can also be multiplied by semi-woody cutting), stripping shrubs, flowering shrubs and various evergreen species. In particular we have:

  • willow cutting
  • Cutting of elegno
  • Magnolia cutting
  • Cutting of piracanthus
  • Ligusto cutting
  • Boxwood cutting
  • Elderberry cutting
  • Cutting of roses
  • Cutting of buddleia
  • Hawthorn cutting
  • Acuba cutting

The period indicated for the woody cutting falls between mid-late autumn and the beginning of winter.

Rooting of plants to multiply by cuttings

To increase the chances of taking root, I always recommend using a phytostimulating substance that can help root formation.

Purchase a cutting powder also known asrooting hormone, this powder promotes the formation starting from totipotent plant cells, of plant cells capable of forming the root system. Among the various rooting products we point out the rooting powder "Verde vivo", proposed on Amazon with free shipping at the price of € 12.60. There are many rooting agents available on the web and on Amazon, you are spoiled for choice.

This substance is not necessary in case of green cutting.

In addition to using a rooting product, remember to always keep the soil moistsprayingwater but without wetting the cutting. Use water at room temperature and not calcareous, so use tap water only if you have allowed it to rest for at least 24 hours.

Cutting fruit plants

For fruit plants, in general, multiplication by grafting is used, however, for particular species the propagation technique by cuttings is preferred. To give you an example we point out the cherry tree cutting.
