Mammillaria, a succulent plant which can take on various aspects and is quite common even if the name does not sound familiar to everyone. It often produces flowers, is elegant and may have thorns but also not. We get to know her and maybe even keep one in our apartment, even if we don't have a bright green thumb. Some varieties of Mammillaria they have a beautiful flower of white color, others were used by the natives of America to treat deafness or simple earache.

Mammillaria Longiflora

Among the best known varieties of Mammillaria we find this. IS' rounded, although the name may suggest the opposite, and it is also full of thorns. Better not to put your hand on it violently because it will take revenge in a flash.

Its spines, moreover, have the shape of a hook, so they are even more insidious. The flowers this time are not white but pink, large in size. There are other rather well-known species of Mammillaria such as that call Bocasana, small and fluffy, with pink flowers.

M. Hahniana it can measure up to 40 cm, has a rounded stem and turns from green to reddish in cold weather, always remaining covered with many thorns.

Mammillaria spinosissima

The name says it all: this variety has a very large thorn in the center, and then all the others arranged in such a way form an almost choreographic areola. The flowers are also crown-shaped, around the central spine, and are deep pink, very long-lasting.

Mammillaria: classifications

It belongs to the succulent genus, this succulent plant, and it needs a lot of sun, so we must arrange it in a suitable position. Yes they are then some types that need less sun because without fluff and without thorns, but the light is always welcome to this plant.

Some Mammillaria can resist even in very cold climates but in general the recommended temperature for those who want to keep them for a long time is between 6 degrees and 20, so that the stems and flowers are not damaged. In addition to the sun, it also enjoys fresh air and ventilated environments.

Mammillaria: cultivation

To cultivate the Mammillaria need a particularly draining soil, it is usually recommended to add sand, gravel or pumice to the earth, the ideal is to create a mix with two parts of compost and one of draining material. Every year it should be repotted and watered very frequently in summer. In winter, however, very little water is needed and if it is a variety with thorns, even less. Once a year it must be fertilized, with a suitable mixture of phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen with small percentages of iron, magnesium and zinc.

On line, as in succulent plant shops, we can find various specimens of these plants, with different sizes and prices. On Amazon, for example, with 5 euros we can buy 15 seeds ofMammillaria perbella. It is one of the rarest varieties, very beautiful and charming.
